Biography
¡Herb
Lubalin
was born on March 17, 1918 in New York. He is an American graphic designer and
typographer. When he was 17, he was admitted into Cooper Union school where he
graduated in 1939. He moved on to work at Reiss Advertising, and then Sudler
and Hennessy for 20 years. After his work at Sudler
and Hennessy, he opened his own firm, Herb Lubalin
Inc
in 1964. He collaborated with Ralph Ginzburg
on 3 different magazines: Eros, Facts, and Avant Garde.
Making the logo for Avant Garde
led to his typeface ITC Avant Garde,
and art deco style font, being created. He has also designed creative logos for
PBS, Mother and Child, and the World Trade Centers. He has won many awards
including 7 gold medals from the Art Director’s Club and Art Director of the
year from National Society of Art Directors. At 59, he said he had just
finished his apprenticeship. Herb Lubalin
died on May 24, 1981 leaving behind an incredible legacy and brilliant students
like Paula Scher.

Raleway by Google fonts and texgyreadventor are both fonts very similar to Avant Garde, but they are free! :D
Developing my grid system in class today. I made it looking off of one of Lubalin's posters.
Condensed the text down some to fit the requirements.
The inspiration for this came from here!

Maybe I should make the "O" a circle instead of a square letter form, even though it is for a window.

Serif fonts are more elegant and Christmas time in appearance.
After talking with the professor, the brick idea seemed to be too heavy.
